The Story of Bodri

by Hédi Fried (Author), Stina Wirsén (Illustrator)

In The Story of Bodri, Hédi Fried remembers her home and her beloved dog. But her happy childhood, playing with her best friend Marika and their dogs, takes a devastating turn. Nazis invade her country and soon Hédi and her family are rounded up and put on a train. Illustrations show Hédi and her sister in a Nazi concentration camp.

Though the story is simply told, I recommend the book for older kids and adults.

It does end on an up note when loyal Bodri is reunited with Hédi. Hédi and her sister survive and "go on telling everyone about what happened."

The illustrations, with their watercolor effect, are gorgeous and haunting.
