Nicholas, meet Nicholas (and Nicholas)

One Nicholas, and two more . All sweet, but not saccharine.

You are right, Sempé and Goscinny did a great collection of children books without being silly or "super extra sweet". The illustrations of Sempé fit as a glove in the stories written by Goscinny full of humour. Even if they look a little "old fashioned" the humour stays intact and fine. (I have three of those books, that's why I'm saying this) :)
